ORIGINAL STORY: It’s official: Nintendo and The Pokémon Company are taking legal action against Palworld’s developer, Pocketpair.
The companies filed a lawsuit against the developer today, September 18, seeking “an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights.”

“Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights including the Nintendo brand itself, to protect the intellectual properties it has worked hard to establish over the years,” Nintendo’s statement reads.
The filing is absolutely massive news and follows months of speculation that Nintendo would take legal action over the indie survival game that’s been referred to as “Pokémon with guns.” Nintendo previously released a statement about Palworld in January, vowing to “investigate and take appropriate measures” against any potentially infringing content. A modder also claimed that “Nintendo has come for me” after posting a clip with Pokémon’s Ash Ketchum in Palworld.
But six months later, in June, Pocketpair insisted that Nintendo had yet to make a complaint in response to the “Pokémon rip-off” claims. “Nintendo and the Pokémon Company didn’t say anything to us,” Pocketpair boss Takuro Mizobe told Game File at the time. “Of course I love Pokémon and respect it. I grew up with it, in my generation.”
Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have officially filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair.
Palworld launched in early access form in January 2024 on PC via Steam and on Xbox as a day-one Game Pass title and catapulted to tremendous overnight success, but also controversy. Pokémon fans were quick to call out the similarities in Palworld, although the indie developer insisted that Palworld is more akin to survival crafting games such as Ark Survival Evolved and Valheim than Pokémon. Pocketpair’s community manager even said the team has received death threats over the backlash.

Switch exclusive Splatoon 3 will no longer receive regular updates, Nintendo has announced.
Nintendo signaled the end of these updates for the Switch exclusive in a tweet that reassured players that the game will remain online, and that Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes. That suggests fans will get four seasonal Splatfests a year from now on.
Updates for weapon adjustments will be released “as needed,” and Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges “will continue for the time being.”
Nintendo’s announcement comes two years after Splatoon 3, a third-person team-based shooter that revolves around firing ink-based weapons, launched on Nintendo Switch. As of the end of March 2024, Splatoon 3 had sold an impressive 11.96 million copies.

The end of regular updates for Splatoon 3 comes ahead of Nintendo’s hotly anticipated reveal of its next-generation console. Nintendo has indicated the Switch 2, as it’s called by the community, won’t be released before April 2025. Given the popularity of the Splatoon franchise, it seems likely that another game in the series will be released at some point.
While Nintendo has yet to say anything about the Switch 2 itself, it has said it expects to have plenty of stock available for launch, which in turn will hopefully combat scalping. Recent alleged details on the power of the Switch 2 weren’t the first rumors to spread about Nintendo’s new console. Other allegedly leaked details have suggested that the device will feature magnetic versions of the Joy-Cons and maybe even let players use their old controllers. If these recent rumors are to be believed, you’ll also be able to enjoy your physical and digital games on the Switch 2, including Splatoon 3.

While Switch console shortages are a thing of the past, the more limited-edition models can be challenging to find for retail price. But ahead of the release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the Tears of the Kingdom-themed Switch OLED is available for its original $360 price. The console is sold by third-party sellers, but your order will ship directly from Amazon and is eligible for fast delivery via Amazon Prime.
Echoes of Wisdom launches September 26 alongside a new Zelda-themed Switch Lite. Check out both consoles as well as some Zelda controllers, carrying cases, and grips below.
The Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED is arguably the best special-edition Switch console. It comes with gold Zelda-themed Joy-Con controllers, a white dock accented with the Hylian Crest and a circular pattern that matches the back of the console itself. The console does not come with the game, but you can grab a copy for a discount at Amazon.
It’s a big plus that this special-edition was made for the OLED console, the best of the three Switch models. It has the same internal hardware as the base model Switch, but with some welcome improvements like double the internal storage, a sturdier kickstand, and a wider dock with an ethernet port.
Naturally, the biggest improvement is swapping LCD for OLED screen tech. The 7-inch display is gorgeous. Nintendo games often have bright color palettes, and the Switch OLED has a wider and more vibrant color range. The other big benefit of OLED displays is they handle black and dark colors better than LCD displays.
If you decide to pick up the Zelda-themed Switch OLED ahead of Echoes of Wisdom’s launch, there are some accessories you could pair it with.
The official Tears of the Kingdom Switch Pro Controller originally launched alongside the console for $75. It’s been out of stock at major retailers ever since, but you can pick one up for $85 from a third-party seller with Prime delivery directly from Amazon.
The Zelda-themed Joy-Con controllers are certainly pretty, but Joy-Cons aren’t the best in the ergonomics department. One way to fix that would be to pick up a Switch OLED grip that adds traditional controller handles for portable play. Satisfye released an excellent (unofficial) Zelda-themed grip specifically designed to match the Tears of the Kingdom console. You can pick up the ZenGrip Pro for $45, or you can grab the newer ZenGrip Ronin–grants access to the kickstand when the grip is attached–for $50. A Ronin bundle with a matching carrying case is available for $70.
The console comes with a Joy-Con grip for docked play, but if you want a Zelda-themed model, there are a few options for cheap. For $13.49, you can get a grip from PowerA featuring Princess Zelda. PowerA also has versions featuring Link and the Master Sword.
Alternatively, you can keep your Zelda Joy-Con controllers pristine by swapping them out for the Tears of the Kingdom-themed Split Pad Pro by Hori. The Split Pad offers a more traditional shape with larger buttons and sticks as well as adding two remappable back buttons. The Tears of the Kingdom Split Pad Pro usually retails for $60, but it’s on sale for $49.22 right now.
If you want a more budget-friendly option or need to complete your Zelda Switch collection, check out the Hyrule Edition Switch Lite that launches alongside The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom on September 26. Priced at $210, it’s not as ornate as the OLED Switch, but it does have a classy golden finish and Triforce symbols at the back. In comparison, the smaller Switch Lite is strictly a handheld gaming console.
Though it doesn’t come with a copy of Echoes of Wisdom, you will get a 12-month Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership ($50 value). Switch Online unlocks access to online multiplayer and libraries of retro games for NES, SNES, and Game Boy. The Expansion Pack tier also has growing libraries of GBA, Nintendo 64, and Sega Genesis games.
All told, members have access to nine classic Zelda games: The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II, A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening DX, Oracle of Seasons and Ages, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and The Minish Cap.

Kyoto’s Nintendo Museum is getting a special Pokémon-themed manhole cover featuring Pikachu. The manhole cover’s design features the electrified rodent leaping out of a GameBoy, with pixels shooting outward in his wake.
Nintendo showed off the surprising new choice in street decor via an official blog post, giving prospective museum-goers a closer look at the design. Pikachu isn’t the only character from the franchise to get a special themed manhole cover, however–a whole collection of them have been popping up in various Japanese cities, featuring other Pokémon, like Golem and Vulpix. Nintendo has even released a map showing the location of each manhole cover–referring to them as “Poké Lids”–along with a bit of an explanation for why they exist to begin with.
“Poké Lids, artistic covers for utility holes, have recently started to be spotted in some cities,” reads the Poké Lid site’s description. “Who knows if they are of Pokémonopolistic nature? It seems that not all utility holes are man-made; rumor has it that Diglett may be responsible for digging large enough holes to be mistaken for utility holes, and some artists took it upon themselves to “mark” the covers to differentiate them from ordinary ones. Where will the next ‘mark’ be?”
The Poké Lids are likely meant to function as quirky promotional advertising for the Nintendo Museum, which officially opens on October 2 in Kyoto, Japan. The museum sits on a property once known as the Ogura Plant, where Nintendo previously manufactured trading cards, along with offering repair services for consoles.
Nintendo fans got their first good look at the museum during a September 2023 Nintendo Direct, during which it was stated that the museum would feature a “wide variety of products from Nintendo’s history”–manholes included, apparently.

The Nintendo Switch is going out in a blaze of glory, with some exciting games launching to make way for the console’s successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. Whether they’re exclusively developed for the Switch or ported over from other platforms, these upcoming Switch games will make the hybrid console’s final year one of its most memorable.
In the second half of 2024, we’ll get our hands on a bunch of new games that were announced during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct, including the long-awaited Metroid Prime 4, as well as some of the titles highlighted during this year’s gamescom. Nintendo initially dropped this creepy teaser without any indication of what they had up their sleeves. A week later, they announced Emio – The Smiling Man, the first new addition to the Famicom Detective Club visual novel series in over 30 years. This murder mystery game strikes a darker tone than most recent Nintendo titles and comes three years after the Switch remakes of the first two Famicom Detective Club games (The Mystery Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind).
Bandai Namco’s Gundam Breaker 4 lets you build and customize your own Gunpla before putting it to the test in combat missions. You can play online with friends to collect parts, but the Gundam Breaker 4 devs told IGN this game returns to the series’ model-building roots with more single-player content, including getting to show off your creations with a new Diorama Mode.
Ace Attorney: Investigations Collection features Miles Edgeworth’s adventures beyond the courtroom in remasters of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth and Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor’s Gambit, the latter of which is making its debut outside of Japan. You can swap between the revamped anime art style or the original pixelated art style, play in additional languages, and discover more bonus content.
In Funko Fusion, you’ll play as 60 different characters modelled after the Funko Pop figures you collect from 20 different pop culture franchises, including Jurassic Park, Five Nights at Freddy’s, Invincible, Back to the Future, M3GAN, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and The Walking Dead. It’s a crossover adventure of extremely cute proportions!

In our hands-on preview of The Plucky Squire, we said “it’s rare to find something that feels this unique.” You take on the role of Jot, a storybook hero, to traverse a mix of 2D and 3D challenges in some pretty darn beautiful environments. For any Switch players who love platforming and puzzles, this indie game should definitely be one to look out for.
EA Sports FC 25 for Switch (September 20, 2024)
Answering the big question: the newest addition to EA’s FC series (FIFA’s successor) features Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham on the cover. It also introduces 5v5 Rush mode, bringing an option for shorter matches in online play. In our review of FC 24 on Switch, we noted that the game struggled on the handheld compared to other consoles, so hopefully we see a better port for the classic soccer (excuse me, football) game this year.
Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed (September 24, 2024)
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a faithful remake of the original Wii title courtesy of Purple Lamp Studios. The plot remains the same, with Mickey teaming up with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to restore Wasteland to its former glory with the very tools he used to mess up Yen Sid’s creation in his workshop — paint and thinner. The game will run on Unreal Engine 5, which enhanced the graphics and dimmed the lighting to match the game’s dark environment.
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (September 26, 2024)
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom features Zelda as the protagonist for the first time in the franchise’s history. The princess is tasked with rescuing Link and other people in Hyrule after strange rifts popped up all over the kingdom and took them. She’ll work with a fairy named Tri and use the Tri Rod to create echoes of objects found in her environment to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. She’ll create echoes of enemies she fights and forcibly recruit them to her team as well. This will be the eighth Legend of Zelda game on Nintendo Switch since its launch.
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time (October 10, 2024)
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is the long-awaited sequel to the original RPG-style life-sim game that released on Nintendo 3DS in 2014. In addition to working any job you want – from woodcutter, blacksmith, paladin, cook, and more – each with its own set of quests, you’ll get to build your own city on an abandoned island, travel through time, and meet new characters with some mysteries of their own.
Super Mario Party Jamboree (October 17, 2024)
Super Mario Party Jamboree is the third Mario Party game to come to the Switch following Mario Party Superstars and Super Mario Party. You’ll be taken to a large island resort to play over 110 minigames between five new game boards with different environmental hazards, including Rainbow Galleria and Goomba Lagoon, and compete in Koopathlon mode with up to 20 players. Plus, it will bring back Mario’s Rainbow Castle and Western Land from Mario Party and Mario Party 2, respectively.
Sonic x Shadow Generations (October 22, 2024)
This big release from SEGA is a bundle of two Sonic games for the Switch: a remaster of 2011’s Sonic Generations as well as an all-new platformer, Shadow Generations. Well, sort of all new. Because it’s a Generations game, we’ll get to see “remastered” versions of stages and abilities from some old-school favorites, including Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes.
Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven -Remake- (October 24, 2024)
After 31 years of Japanese exclusivity, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven is getting a full-blown remake treatment in the West, English voice acting, enhanced graphics and all. You play as an emperor or empress of Avalon, building the kingdom and protecting as you fight the seven heroes who have returned as villains hellbent on revenge on those who have forgotten their sacrifices.
FAITH: The Unholy Trinity (October 25, 2024)
This pixel horror game became a cult classic (in all senses of the word) when it released on PC back in 2022. This October, just in time for Halloween, FAITH: The Unholy Trinity is launching on the Nintendo Switch.
From the creator of Fairy Tale and Rave Master comes Farmigia, a game about monster combat and farming. In the realm of Felicidad, you play as Ten and help him grow monsters in a garden and raise them as an army to fight against a despotic king of the underworld.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership (November 7, 2024)
Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the first entry in the Mario & Luigi series to make the jump to the Switch with 3D graphics and a unique animation style. This game will see the Super Mario Bros. go island-hopping across Concordia on a part ship, part island called Shipshape Island, visiting rainforests, cities, and running into other characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, including Princess Peach and Bowser.
Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D (November 14, 2024)
Announced in 2021, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake has finally been confirmed for the Switch to the delight of Dragon Quest fans. Developed with the gameplay styles of Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D takes you back to where the franchise began as you save the world from the evil Baramos. Chronologically speaking, this is the first game of the Erdrick Trilogy, with Dragon Quest 1-2 HD 2D Remake coming out in 2025.
If you’ve already fallen in love with this game, now you get to take it with you on the go. If you haven’t played Stray yet, now’s your chance. Roam the streets and immerse yourself in the details of a pretty expansive cyberpunk world as a very cute kitty.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (January 16, 2025)
Donkey Kong Country Returns gets the HD treatment for Switch, and it will have new features that will make you go bananas. You’ll play through 80 levels from the original Wii game, additional levels from the 3DS version, and play in two-player local co-op as you fight the Taki Tak Tribe to win back Donkey Kong’s previous banana pile.
Civilization VII (February 11, 2025)*
One of the biggest announcements at gamescom 2024 was a release date for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Featuring Gwendolyn Christie as narrator, Civ 7 will be the second in the series to make it onto the Switch. Over the last year, we’ve been hearing rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 regarding its appearance, release date, and name. Though the Switch 2 should have been released by now per the 7-year console release rule, Nintendo has reportedly delayed its release to March 2025 in an effort to curb scalping and garner enough stock to satisfy demand. There are also rumors that the Switch 2, if that’s its final name, has the same hybrid functionality as the original, but with a bigger screen.

Almost seven years after it launched, Nintendo’s free-to-play mobile spin-off Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is shutting down. While the current version of the game will be taken down on November 29th, 2024, players will be able to continue their progress in an offline version of the game requiring a one-off purchase.
Nintendo made the announcement today, giving players just over three months to wrap up their affairs in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has supported the title since service began,” Nintendo’s message to players reads. Despite the game nearing the end of its lifespan, the announcement added that it will continue to hold events and add items until the end of service.
Unlike other live-service games that have been taken offline in recent years, Nintendo is giving players the option to transfer their save data to an offline-only version of the app–though the new version will require a one-off purchase.
“The basic gameplay and controls will be the same as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp,” Nintendo said in an explainer. “There will be no in-app purchases or subscription services (like Pocket Camp Club). However, since this app will not require a continuous online connection, some features that require that connection, e.g. Market Boxes, gifts, and visiting other players’ campsites will not be available.”
Players will be unable to sign up for any of the game’s subscriptions after October 28, which Nintendo describes as the start of the maintenance period. Leaf Tickets will also expire and aren’t able to be transferred to the offline version of the game, so make sure you spend them before November 28.
Nintendo has included a guide on transferring your save data for players on iOS and Android, and has said it will release more information about the paid app in October.
