Zelda: Breath Of The Wild And Tears Of The Kingdom Updates Out Now, Fix Zelda Notes Issues

Nintendo has rolled out new updates for both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. The latest patches are fairly minor, primarily addressing a few issues related to the Zelda Notes service for the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of both games.

According to Nintendo’s patch notes, the new updates resolve a bug that can occur when attempting to use certain Daily Bonus perks. Specifically, Nintendo says it has “fixed an issue in which the player was unable to use the Daily Bonus effects ‘Health Recovery’ or ‘Hearty Meal’ if they had increased their hearts to the maximum number.”

The updates also resolve “several other issues related to Zelda Notes,” although no specific details were provided beyond that. Both games have also gotten other minor fixes “to improve the gameplay experience.” You can read the full patch notes for each update below.

You’ll need to install the latest patches in order to continue using the Zelda Notes service. The updates should download automatically when your system connects to the internet, but you can manually initiate the download by highlighting the game’s icon on the home menu, pressing the Plus Button, and selecting Software Update.

Zelda Notes is a companion service available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Players who own the Switch 1 versions can purchase upgrade packs for the games through the eShop. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can also download both upgrade packs for free, although it may not be immediately clear how to.

Nintendo Switch 2 users have two official methods for charging the new Joy-Con 2 Controllers for wireless play. Out of the box, you can dock the console with the controllers attached before removing them for TV mode, either connected to the grip or turned to the side for single Joy-Con controls. For $40, you can replace the standard grip with the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, which lets you charge the right and left controllers while playing. But if you have an extra set of Joy-Con 2 Controllers for local multiplayer, you’ll either need to purchase two Charging Grips or take turns charging each pair.

Nintendo and its third-party partners have released plenty of notable Switch 2 accessories already, but we have yet to see officially licensed charging docks for Joy-Con 2 Controllers. We imagine those will start popping up before long, but what about right now? Unofficial controller charging docks for Switch 2 exist already–in fact, there are tons of Joy-Con 2 charging stations at Amazon, including models that charge four or more controllers at once. Some of the manufacturers currently producing Joy-Con 2 charging stations have made popular, well-received controller chargers for original Joy-Con Controllers as well as the PS5 DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controllers.

Magnetic connections hold your Joy-Con 2 in place as they charge, LED indicators let you know when they’re ready for action, and various protections like overvoltage and overcurrent protection should help keep your controllers safe even though this is an unofficial product. It comes with a 90-day Woot warranty.

This is a brand new, genuine Nintendo Switch console, but keep in mind that it is an “international version”. That means it’s an imported model and the manufacturer’s warranty it comes with will most not likely be valid in the United States (however you do get the Woot warranty). The packaging and materials might also be written in another language. Functionally, however, every Switch console is region unlocked so you’ll be able to play it in the US without any problems. You’ll be able to select English as your default language just like any console you buy here.

If you can afford the small price premium of the Switch OLED over the non-OLED model, then I think it’s worth the upgrade. The Nintendo Switch OLED features an OLED display that offers better image quality than the original LCD display. That includes deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and a better color gradient. The text is sharper and easier to read as well. The screen isn’t that much bigger (7″ on the OLED vs 6.2″ on the non-OLED), but it does feel a lot bigger thanks to a thinner bezel. Other upgrades worth mentioning are a new and improved kickstand, a hard-wired ethernet port on the docking station, and an exclusive white Switch shell and matching Joy-Cons.

The Switch 2 is out, but the original Switch is still relevant

The new Nintendo Switch 2 is now available, but in no way does this make the original Swich console irrelevant. For starters, the Switch 2 comes in at a much higher retail price of $449.99. There is also only one brand new triple-A game currently available for it – Mario Kart World Tour – and that game retails for $79.99 unless you are lucky enough to find one of the $500 bundles that already includes the game. Some other games feature visual and performance enhancements for the Switch 2 console, but that’s hardly worth the price premium. I myself have decided to hold off purchasing the Switch 2 until more must-play games have been released or a really cool themed edition becomes available.

tomtoc has a history of making great cases for mobile electronics. It makes popular cases for most current gaming handhelds, including the original Switch and Switch Lite, Steam Deck, and Asus ROG Ally. Its signature trademark is the raised indent patterning for each handheld’s unique analog joystick and button layout. This is mostly an aesthetic touch, but it helps set tomtoc cases apart from the clamshell design you’ll see for nearly every other case out there.

Material-wise, the tomtoc is a hard shell case with a felt inner lining. It has an interior flap that can fit up to twelve game cards. Other features include a buckle strap and durable YKK zipper. The tomtoc Slim is available in black, white, and gray, although only the black color has the multi-colored logo. Since this is a slim case, there’s no room to fit a charger.

It’s only a matter of time before an accessory manufacturer releases an alternative handheld controller designed for Nintendo Switch 2. Controllers like Hori’s officially licensed Split Pad Pro/Compact and CRKD’s Nitro Deck became popular choices for those seeking better ergonomics and customization features. But you actually don’t have to wait to ditch the Joy-Con 2. I’ve spent the past few days playing the Switch 2 in handheld mode with the versatile GameSir G8 Plus Galileo Bluetooth Controller.

The G8 Plus has an extendable cradle like the Backbone Pro, Razer Kishi V3 Pro, and many other mobile controllers. Where it differs from most is that it offers Nintendo Switch support in addition to iOS and Android. Store pages haven’t been updated to mention Switch 2, but I’ve spent the past few days using the G8 Plus and can confirm it offers the same functionality on Nintendo’s new console.

So far, I’ve found that the G8 Plus works well on Switch 2 and has several features beyond improved ergonomics that make it a compelling alternative: back buttons, Hall Effect sticks, swappable components, a traditional D-pad, and Marvel-themed designs.

GameSir collaborated with Marvel to create officially licensed models themed around Hulk and Thanos. Both Marvel editions are currently on sale for $80 at Walmart. If you don’t like Marvel, the standard black version is available for the same price at Amazon.

The officially licensed Incredible Hulk Edition is also available for $80 (was $100) at Walmart. The controller is sold by GameSir and ships from Walmart.

The Hulk Edition uses a vibrant green color accented by a few pieces of purple artwork. It’s a more subdued design than many themed controllers, since the artwork was designed to blend in with the base colors.

All five sticks and the D-pad match the darker green found on the back of the controller. The face buttons are purple (A and B) and green (X and Y). Hulk’s name is outlined in purple across the back and punctuated by his fist.

If you’d rather have a controller themed around The Mad Titan, the Thanos Edition is officially licensed by Marvel and available for $80 (was $100) at Walmart. Like the Hulk model, it ships from Walmart and is sold by GameSir.

The Thanos Edition has a gold and purple color scheme. The front is accented by glossy gold artwork, and the back is purple with “Thanos” written in large block letters across the center.

The face buttons are purple and gold (two of each), and the D-pad and triggers match the glossy gold accents. It comes with one purple stick and four gold sticks.

The G8 Plus is equipped with Hall Effect sticks that feel smooth and precise. Hall Effect sensors are considered “anti-drift,” so they should hold up well over time. The Joy-Con 2 Controllers have ALPS sticks, and some users have already started experiencing problems with drift.

As mentioned, there are several other features that make it a compelling option for Switch 2. It has a pair of remappable back buttons, one on each side, and a traditional D-pad. The back buttons can be remapped on the controller itself or in GameSir’s mobile app.

It also has a 6-axis gyroscope for motion controls and rumble motors on each side. With a more traditional controller form factor, the G8 Plus has better ergonomics than the Joy-Con 2.

The face buttons have the Xbox Controller layout, so A/B and X/Y are flipped. By default, Nintendo consoles will register the buttons as they are labeled, which may confuse some players. But there are two solutions to this problem. The G8 Plus has hot-swappable face buttons and sticks, allowing users to remove the faceplate, pop off the button caps, and switch their positions. If you don’t want to do this every time you switch between playing on mobile and Switch 2, you can enable “Switch mode” by holding the program button (M) and A. In this mode, the Switch registers A/B and X/Y as opposites.

Inside the box, you’ll find three additional stick caps that can replace the traditional sticks that come preinstalled. The trio of alternatives includes a domed model, a tall stick for FPS games, and a short stick with a smaller cap. Speaking of FPS games, you can enable hair trigger mode, which actuates the right and left triggers with shorter pulls.

There are a couple potential downsides to keep in mind when using the G8 Plus with the Switch 2. While the grip holds the Switch 2 securely in place and has a rubberized bridge and pads on each side to help prevent scratches, it doesn’t connect to the console like the Joy-Con controllers. When carrying the console around, you probably want to make sure you are holding the Switch 2 itself, not just the grip. Due to the Switch 2’s size, the edges extend beyond the top and bottom of the grips, leaving them exposed. You may want to add a protective shell to the Switch 2 when using the controller. Additionally, keep in mind that you will need to remove the Switch 2 from the cradle to dock it.

I often use the G8 Plus when gaming on iPhone. Platform versatility is a major perk here. It’s inevitable that manufacturers will release handheld Switch 2 controllers, but it’s unlikely many of them will work with other devices. So even if you wind up purchasing a different controller or adding an ergonomic grip to the console, the G8 Plus doesn’t need to collect dust. You can even use it as a wireless controller on Switch 2 (or Switch) when playing on your TV.

It’s more or less agreed that Yakuza 0 is really good–many will even say the best in the whole series. But with the Switch 2’s launch lineup being somewhat sparse, Sega (and Nintendo, which has timed exclusivity on this edition) are likely hoping players want to complement their Mario Karting, Cyberpunk 2077ing, and Street Fighting with a hard-hitting open-world adventure. But is it worth it? It really depends.

At $50, Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is cheaper than many of the other Switch 2 launch games, and there’s a lot to do here between the lengthy, dual-protagonist narrative and the surprisingly involving minigames. You can easily get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut, and that’s not even taking into account the new content.

The first major difference is the addition of new voice and subtitle tracks. Your choice of voice actors is down to personal preference, but for me, the Japanese ones are too iconic to switch away from. Chinese and English voice tracks have been recorded for the entire game. If you’re a series veteran, you’ll also notice that the demo cinematic features the Japanese rock song “Bubble” by Shounan no Kaze–a song featured in the original Yakuza 0’s Japanese release but excised overseas. It’s back, it’s rockin’, and it sets the stage for a grand old time in 1988 Bubble Era Japan.

At the title screen, there’s a mode selectable right off the bat: Red Light Raid, which has you and up to four online or offline companions beating up waves of hooligans for fun and profit. I was intrigued by this mode, hoping it might serve as a callback to classic multiplayer arcade brawlers–some of which were made by Sega itself. What I actually got was somewhat underwhelming: You pick a character out of a massive roster (many of which require a good amount of in-game cash to unlock) and take them into battle with up to four player- or CPU-controlled companions. You’ll pick a challenge, fight wave after wave of enemies, sometimes encountering a boss fight, before dealing with a final boss. Finishing a challenge run earns you lots of sweet, sweet yen.

You can do all the fun head-cracking, chest-smashing moves here as you can in the base game (though both Kiryu and Majima require you to pick one fighting style and stick with it). It’s a way to play as characters who are otherwise uncontrollable in the base game, which is nice. But overall it feels undercooked: Characters vary wildly in usefulness, and the sessions can devolve into messy chaos, especially in dark settings and on the Switch 2’s handheld mode. It’s obvious this game’s combat, which frequently takes place in narrow streets, corridors, and cluttered rooms, wasn’t built for multiplayer originally—and it frequently feels crowded and hard to get your bearings even on more open arenas. There’s a mix of character models and moves mostly mashed together from this game and others in the series, including a lot of barely-seen NPCs. Still, if you can get your friend group together in a GameChat channel as you play, you’ll have some fun.

Graphically, I didn’t notice any major changes or upgrades compared to the PS4 original–the textures look mostly identical and the character models seem to be a 1:1 port, though the Switch 2 version does include 4K support.

One of the bigger selling points has been the addition of five brand-new cutscenes–almost a half-hour’s worth. I got the impression that these new scenes were meant to give some additional screen time to characters who fell by the wayside in the original, along with additional screentime for the Kiryu and Nishikiyama duo. They’re certainly a nice addition, though how much you’ll get from them depends on how invested in the cast you are.

Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut is definitely an upgrade–but the biggest elephant in the room is that the original Yakuza 0 has frequently gone on very deep discount on Steam and elsewhere; during some sales, you could pick this saga up for well under $10. Even at a lower-than-average price of $50, this poses the question: Do the additional cutscenes, voice/subtitle languages, and other extra content in Director’s Cut make up for that big price hike? For me, no–I like this series a lot, but I’m not hungry enough for new Yakuza to want to pay a huge premium for some extras that ultimately don’t add all that much. But if you can’t get enough of that crime drama, English isn’t your first language, or you just have to have an English or Chinese voice track, then go ahead and grab it–it’s a fantastic time.

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 has become the company’s “fastest-selling” hardware ever globally with over 3.5 million units sold in its first four days.

Nintendo shared the news on Twitter/X, saying, “#NintendoSwitch2 has sold over 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days, becoming the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware ever globally.”

This big number was undoubtedly reached in large part thanks to the available stock of Switch 2, which hasn’t always been guaranteed in the past for hardware from Nintendo and its competitors. It also falls in line with Nintendo of America boss Doug Bowser’s comments that Nintendo will have enough Switch 2 units to meet demand in the U.S., and demand there has been.

For comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.74 million units in less than its first month.

This news arrives shortly after The Game Business reported that Switch 2 was now the fastest-selling Nintendo console in UK history, surpassing the previous record holder, Nintendo 3DS.

In our Nintendo Switch review in progress, we said, “So far this sequel system is about what I was expecting: An iterative upgrade to an already excellent Nintendo console that modernizes many desperately out of date aspects, improves countless design elements in small but noticeable ways, and takes a swing on a genuinely impressive new control option that also doesn’t quite work as smoothly as I’d hoped.”

Auto-uploading is one of the features that can be enabled even without a membership. To turn it on, go to System Settings, scroll down to Data Management, and then find the Manage Screenshots and Videos menu. From here, select Upload Settings, and turn on the toggle for automatic uploads. The process will ask you to select which account you are changing settings for, which should be the same account you’re logged into on both the Switch app and your Switch 2 console.

The automatic upload feature will store up to 100 files in the app for a maximum of 30 days, so make sure to download any pics and videos you want, and periodically clean them out if you take a lot of screenshots and video captures.

The Nintendo Switch App can also be used to check and manage your friends list, and it also has some companion features for certain games–including the new voice-acted Zelda Notes guide exclusively for the Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. While the app can be used for voice chat with friends on the original Nintendo Switch, this functionality has been replaced by the Switch 2 internal app GameChat.
